MC DONALD has began to use paper straw in global shops

Now, it is almost inevitable that the plastic straws will be removed from our daily habits. Because the waste caused by plastic straws is really incalculable. In the United States alone, people lose 500 million straws a day. According to "one less straw", these straws can be connected around the earth two and a half times.

People started to act, they told the restaurant waiter, don't provide a straw. Starting this summer, Seattle will ban all businesses from selling food and beverages with plastics, and straws are no exception; California has a bill that is in the pipeline, requiring restaurants to provide straws only when customers ask for it. Scotland plans to achieve a complete elimination of plastic straws by the end of 2019.

McDonald's also responded positively to the call. In more than 1,300 stores across the UK, McDonald's has replaced plastic straws with biodegradable paper straws, and will only provide straws when they are on demand when they request it. This can also be considered as a test to see how people's attitude towards paper straws is. Once McDonald's is successful in the UK, it will be promoted worldwide.

Harm of plastic straws

Although the straws are recyclable, there are very few real recycling. We usually throw straws on the side of the road and they are sent to the landfill. And they have the greatest threat to the ocean. Although they are not the largest source of pollution in our waterways, fish and birds are affected. The straw is not large, so marine life is easy to swallow. Plastic items like straws and forks are even stuck in the turtle's nose.

According to Strawless Ocean, we found plastic in the stomachs of 71% of seabirds and 30% of sea turtles. These are all made by humans, and we could have avoided them - when these animals ingested plastic, their mortality rate reached 50%.

Replacement of plastic straws

Although McDonald's uses a paper straw instead, it's not the only option, but it's a better way to throw away plastic straws. If you still "can't stop" the straw, you can choose a non-disposable straw, or you can make a plan for yourself. Bamboo, glass and metal are also used to make reusable straws. You can carry it with you, you can even put it in the glove box of the car. When you want to use the straw, just use it at any time.
